WHAT IS VERMICOMPOSTING?

Vermicomposting is defined as a bio-oxidative process in which detritivorous earthworms interact with microorganisms and other fauna within the decomposer community, accelerating the stabilisation of organic matter and greatly modifying its physical and biochemical properties.

WHERE SHOULD I USE VERMICOMPOST?

Ideally, vermicompost is added in soil mixture during potting of a new plant. One part garden soil, one part

coco-peat & one part vermicompost (1:1:1) are thoroughly mixed and added

to the pot.

HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO APPLY VERMICOMPOST TO POTS?

Apart from being part of the potting mixture, most potted plants should be given an extra dose of vermicompost
during their various growth stages. A handful of vermicompost can be added to a pot every 1-2 months. When vermicompost is superficially mixed with the upper surface of the soil, it is known as 'Top Dressing'. It then ensures the healthy and fast growth of plants.

HOW DO I APPLY VERMICOMPOST TO EXISTING POTTED PLANTS?

Houseplants are an ideal vermicompost recipient because you can amend these guys year-round. Remove a small amount of potting soil from the plant’s pot and replace it with some vermicompost. Sprinkle 1/4 to 1/2 inch into the pot to replace the soil you took out. Offer this little treat every other month and you’ll have your houseplants eating out of your hands.

HOW DO I APPLY VERMICOMPOST AS A SEED STARTER?

Vermicompost is a terrific amendment for starting seeds, as it is nutrient-rich and helps support the young plant’s growth. If you’re starting seeds indoors, simply add a little bit to the seed-starting medium. For outdoor seed planting, just sprinkle it along the trench or into the holes that you dug for your seeds.

WHEN IS AN IDEAL TIME TO APPLY VERMICOMPOST?

The ideal time to add soil amendments that are high in nutritional value is while plants are actively growing. Not that you can’t add it to the garden bed at any time, but that’s when it makes the most sense to the plants. During spring, summer, and post monsoons, both vegetable and ornamental plants can take advantage of the excellent waterholding properties of vermicompost.

HOW TO APPLY VERMICOMPOST AS A TOP DRESSING?

To use your garden gold as a top dressing, just apply it to the drip line of any plant. The drip line is around the circumference of the plant that starts at the longest outward branches. Picture it as if someone was at the top of a plant or tree & spraying water onto the branches; the drip line is the area where the water would 'drip off' & land onto the ground. A lot of water and nutrition is taken up by the tiny roots in this area.

HOW MUCH VERMICOMPOST DO I USE IN A 10X10 SQUARE FEET AREA?

For a 10x10 Square feet area, you will require approximately 13 kgs of vermicompost applied for the seeds grow
time. If you are getting tissue plant shifting done, then you would require approximately 6.5kgs of vermicompost applied. For a regular growth period of a plant you may apply approximately 250 gms of vermicompost every other
month.

HOW DO I USE VERMICOMPOST EFFECTIVELY ON TREES?

For usage of vermicompost on new trees use approximately 1 kg on every new tree. For established trees you may apply 0.5 kg per inch diameter every 45-50 days. For large trees you may apply approximately 0.7 kg per inch diameter once every two month.
